Mounjaro and oral HRT Posted or Updated on 22 Jul 2025

Important Information: Risks of Using HRT and Mounjaro

Together

We would like to inform our patients about important emerging information regarding the use of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) alongside Mounjaro (tirzepatide)—a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes and support weight loss.

What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is a relatively new medication that helps control blood sugar levels and promote weight loss by mimicking gut hormones that regulate appetite and insulin response.

Why the concern?

There is growing evidence suggesting that Mounjaro may affect how the body absorbs oral medications, including HRT tablets. This may potentially reduce the effectiveness of HRT in managing menopausal symptoms and protecting long-term health.

Key Points to Be Aware Of:

·         • Mounjaro slows digestion, which may delay or reduce the absorption of medications taken by mouth.

·         • This includes oral forms of oestrogen and progesterone used in HRT.

·         • Reduced absorption could lead to a return or worsening of menopausal symptoms, or affect the protective benefits of HRT (such as bone health).

·         • Transdermal (patch or gel) forms of HRT are not affected in the same way and may be a safer alternative if you're taking Mounjaro.

What You Should Do:

·         • Do not stop taking your medication without medical advice.

·         • If you're taking both HRT and Mounjaro and notice a change in symptoms, please contact your GP or practice nurse.

·         • Your treatment may be reviewed, and switching to a non-oral form of HRT may be recommended.

We are here to support you in managing your health safely and effectively. If you have any concerns, please book an appointment to discuss your medication review.
